Donald McLaren Funeral Home

CRGP were appointed by Donald McLaren Ltd to design a new build funeral home on a brownfield site in Airdrie to replace their existing funeral home which was not longer fit for purpose. The new building had to contain a number of small meeting spaces, viewing rooms and a large service room. A large car park was critical and the building itself had to consider the sensitive and public facing nature of the Client’s business.

Our approach was to investigate the position and orientation of the building and car parking first as the site had a steep change in level across the middle. Access and movement for vehicles was critical and this, coupled with the building brief, influenced the position of the building and parking. We then looked at the building design internally from a visitors perspective and formed blocks of accommodation around top light break out spaces which would allow grieving family members a space to gather their thoughts before and after meeting with one of the funeral directors.

The flow of spaces naturally led to the large double height service room which was designed with an expressed glue lam timber frame which provides warmth and a connection to nature within the space.
