Home is Where the Art Is
30 November 2007
When Thomas Smith Tait designed the Paisley Infectious Diseases Hospital in 1934, he would never have imagined that more than 70 years later the buildings would form the backbone of 131 new apartments. After becoming surplus to requirements these discarded buildings are to be regenerated by The Burrell Company. Planning approval has been granted and the architect, Elder and Cannon, are progressing with a building warrant submission. Glasgow architects and surveyors, CRGP have been engaged as quantity surveyor, project manager and CDM Co-ordinator on the £12.5m project and director John Hill was enthusiastic about his company's involvement: "We have worked on many Burrell projects and they display impressive expertise, especially with older listed buildings. It is excellent to be part of a team that will witness the rejuvenation of this building and the surrounding area." The Burrell Company has become a specialist in renovating old buildings such as Schaw House in Bearsden and Drumsheugh Gardens in Edinburgh but Hawkhead Hospital with its art deco style will present a fresh challenge as much of the Grade A and B listed buildings have fallen into severe disrepair. Andrew Burrell, managing director of The Burrell Company, said: "Hawkhead Hospital is made up of several beautiful buildings that have long stood underused. This project will help restore them to something akin to Thomas Smith Tait's original splendour and provide a marvellous place to live in an increasingly popular community." The redevelopment of the site will be further enhanced by Kier Homes involvement as they are building a mix of 200 terraced houses and flats designed by the Holmes Partnership that compliments the original 1930s style.
