Coltness High School, Wishaw
09 July 2009
CRGP has secured Planning Consent for this secondary school in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.
Coltness High School is part of North Lanarkshire Council's Schools and Centres 21 framework agreement, within which CRGP are providing architectural design services to Graham Construction Limited.
The remodelling of the existing school building has been developed specifically to reflect both the constraints and opportunities that exist within this particular site.
The proposals include an 11,900m2 building designed for 800 pupils and 85 teachers, arranged over four storeys, as well as new sports and leisure facilities.
The 'heart' of the school, the main entrance and social space, is given visual emphasis by the sweeping, curving roof enhancing the natural and visual focus of the main entrance, while allowing daylight to flow into the foyer, the social space and beyond.
The school, which will continue to operate throughout the construction process and is due for completion in September 2011, costing around £25 million, and is aiming for a BREEAM 'very good' rating.
Enabling works are already underway with temporary facilities currently due to be installed and commissioned during the school's October holiday week.
Graham Construction "is committed to bringing excellence to the education sector through experience and innovation. Our award winning approach allows us to continually learn and to re-invest our knowledge."
Graham Construction won the competitive process for North Lanarkshire Council's four year, £300 million Schools and Centres 21 framework; one of the UK's largest educational improvement projects. The returned bids were evaluated on a price/quality basis and Graham scored highest overall. The highest score on quality and overall for Coltness High School secured this first project for CRGP and Graham.
Graham has recently completed 3 high school projects for Scottish Borders Council, in Eyemouth, Berwickshire and Earlston, totalling over £72 million.
